Brenda J. Phillips Hong, a Breast Cancer survivor, founded Brenda's Brown Bosom Buddies (BBBB) to support African-American women battling breast cancer. After personal experiences with support groups that didn't fully meet her needs, Hong created BBBB to provide a more inclusive and empowering environment.
Washington D.C. (September 27, 2024) – U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) spoke on the House Floor to recognize the work of Ms. Brenda Phillips-Hong, breast cancer survivor and founder of Brenda’s Brown Bosom Buddies (BBBB) in Birmingham, Alabama. The organization is dedicated to the support, education, and early detection of breast cancer for minority, low-income, and underserved women and men.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —
Black History Month celebrations continue across Central Alabama, including the sixth annual Black Pride Ride, themed “Caravan of Hope.”
Hosted by Brenda’s Brown Bosom Buddies, a nonprofit focused on breast cancer awareness in minority communities, the event also highlights Black culture and pride.
“We wanted more than just acknowledgment—we wanted visible, community-wide celebration,” said founder Brenda Phillips-Hong.
The ride started at McAlpine Park and ended at Erskine Hawkins Park in Ensley, where officials and activists encouraged cultural pride and advocacy.
“Knowing our history helps prevent repeating it,” said participant Katesha Cole.
With 42 cars this year, Phillips-Hong hopes to grow participation and involve more young people next year.
Each year Brenda's Brown Bosom Buddies gives back to those institutions who are on the frontline fighting with our survivors!
