OUR MISSION: focus on helping survivors become "Victors"

BBBB focuses on helping survivors become "Victors" rather than victims.

To educate, facilitate, and install programs and activities that will empower women and men of color who are either Breast Cancer Survivors or have been directly affected by Breast Cancer. Our target audience is women of color.

The organization offers a variety of services, including:

  • Community outreach: Hosting annual events like the Pink Hat/Tie Luncheon and Sistah Strut to raise awareness.
  • Educational programs: Conducting free health forums to educate the community about breast cancer.
  • Practical support: Providing transportation, housekeeping assistance, and financial aid for mammograms.
  • Emotional support: Offering a supportive community for survivors to connect and share experiences.

Through Hong's dedication and passion, BBBB has become a vital resource for African-American women in the Birmingham area, empowering them to face breast cancer with strength and resilience.

Women Breaking Barriers: Brenda Phillisp Hong

Brenda J. Phillips Hong, a Breast Cancer survivor, founded Brenda's Brown Bosom Buddies (BBBB) to support African-American women battling breast cancer. After personal experiences with support groups that didn't fully meet her needs, Hong created BBBB to provide a more inclusive and empowering environment.

Rep. Terri Sewell - Ms. Brenda Phillips-Hong for Annual ‘Sistah Strut’ Walk to Fight Breast Cancer

Washington D.C. (September 27, 2024) – U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) spoke on the House Floor to recognize the work of Ms. Brenda Phillips-Hong, breast cancer survivor and founder of Brenda’s Brown Bosom Buddies (BBBB) in Birmingham, Alabama. The organization is dedicated to the support, education, and early detection of breast cancer for minority, low-income, and underserved women and men.

Black Pride Ride 2025

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —
Black History Month celebrations continue across Central Alabama, including the sixth annual Black Pride Ride, themed “Caravan of Hope.”

Hosted by Brenda’s Brown Bosom Buddies, a nonprofit focused on breast cancer awareness in minority communities, the event also highlights Black culture and pride.

“We wanted more than just acknowledgment—we wanted visible, community-wide celebration,” said founder Brenda Phillips-Hong.

The ride started at McAlpine Park and ended at Erskine Hawkins Park in Ensley, where officials and activists encouraged cultural pride and advocacy.

“Knowing our history helps prevent repeating it,” said participant Katesha Cole.

With 42 cars this year, Phillips-Hong hopes to grow participation and involve more young people next year.

The Annual BBBB Press Conference with Jefferson County Commissioner Sheila Tyson

Each year Brenda's Brown Bosom Buddies gives back to those institutions who are on the frontline fighting with our survivors!
